Hyderabad rains: Kin of dead workers at Bachupally seek compensation

The Bachupally police said that the Twin Cities Contractors Association has said that it would pay Rs 11.5 lakh to the kin of each deceased person.

Hyderabad: Families of the migrant workers who lost their lives in the wall collapse at Bachupally have demanded compensation from the state government. Seven workers, including three of a family, had died after a wall fell on them due to the torrential rain that lashed Hyderabad earlier this week.

All of the deceased—Tirupati and Shankar, both aged 20, Raju 25, his wife Khushi, Ram Yadav, his wife Geetha Yadav, and their 4-year-old son—hailed from Odisha.

Speaking to The South First, Udal Yadav, a relative of Ram and Geetha, said that about 40 to 50 construction workers had been worked there, all hailing from Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Bengal. He added that no one including the builder had come forward to help the families.

Tirupati’s brother also told The South First said that the deaths took place due to the negligence of the builder. He stated that the builder was non-responsive and told the publication that his calls were being evaded.

The Bachupally police said that the Twin Cities Contractors Association has said that it would pay Rs 11.5 lakh to the kin of each deceased person.

The workers were living in sheet sheds at the place at Bachupally where the construction was going on. Due to the heavy rainfall on May 7 in Hyderabad, the retaining wall built around the building collapsed on the sheet sheds where the workers stayed.
